Product Overview
Full Cupping Notes

The Buenos Aires Caturra has a mild dry fragrance, a compound of dark sugars and roasted nuts, that when adding hot water shifts to smells of bittersweet cacao, a hint of caramel, with nutty granola accents. The cup shows balanced sweetness with bittersweet low tones that pair well with heavy-bodied liquor. Always a crowd pleasing brew, Buenos Aires' sweetness is simple, but displays a nice range of raw and cooked brown sugars when roasted to at least City+, along with low tones that are punchy, like dark cocoa, and slightly bittering. Accent notes touch on chocolate-covered pumpkin seeds, pungent burnt sugar, raw and roasted nuts, and vanilla bean. The cup flavors are succinct, with a bit of an abrupt finish, albeit bittersweet. As espresso, Buenos Aires is quite nice as a chocolatey solo shot,  but also functions well as a bittersweet/body base ingredient for a blend.

Origin & Farm Notes

Finca Buenos Aires Estates is a fairly large farm of about 215 hectares in the Dipilto growing region of Nueva Segovia. On our visits to Buenos Aires mill we cup through small batches from the farm, and have been impressed with the clean sweetness of their cultivar-specific process batches. This one is all Caturra, which is a cultivated mutation of Bourbon that occurred in Brazil in the mid '30s, but was planted in South and Central America mostly in the 1950s. Buenos Aires starts 1200 meters above sea level, stretching as high as 1500 meters on the mountain slope. I find their coffee to be very balanced, clean, mild to moderately bright and sweet. It's always such a versatile coffee in terms of roast development and brew method, offering something for both brew and espresso crowds.
