Product Overview
Full Cupping Notes

Being a Robusta, the coffee needs some roast depth to bring out sweetness. It's a naturally low-toned coffee, but also offers faint caramelized notes at Full City and beyond, along with unique earth tones, and savory accents. The fragrance and aroma have a burnt cocoa smell, mild sweetness, though nearly eclipsed by intense bittering notes, hints of pumpkin seeds, vanilla, and Umami accents. The cup has potent bittering, with a mild sweetness providing some relief. Some of the more intense flavors come through as unsweetened baking cocoa, puffed wheat, toasted rice, and tobacco. The intensity gives way to a really long finish of green foresty aromatics and caraway seed. It's important to know ahead of time that Robusta's are typically all bass notes and body, flat acidity, and very low sweetness. They're high in caffeine content too. All this makes them attractive for blends, but they can be quite interesting to try on their own too, and pair well with milk.

Origin & Farm Notes

We don't have a lot of info on the collector who delivered this Robusta lot, other than his name, Julianto, and that the coffee was collected from small farms in Garut area, West Java. For those who've not tried Robusta, they tend to be all bittering low tones, and earthy notes. Often unpalatable on their own, Robusta's is typically prized for its massive body and high caffeine content, making it a popular ingredient for blending. But this lot is unique in the subtle sweetness pulp natural processing seems to bring, and certainly worth tasting if you're interested in Robusta, or just enjoy tasting different types of coffees. It's still incredibly intense and rustic, so know that before giving it a go (and please read the cupping notes and look over our score graphs)! It's a honey process coffee, meaning some of the fruit is left intact to the seed after pulping the outer cherry, and during the entire drying stage. This can lead to interesting cup flavors, and I do think it's behind some of the sweetness we're getting in the cup, albeit still very low intensity. It's also behind the appearance of the green coffee. Expect uneven coloring, with some bug holes (see photo).
