Kenya Muranga Kangunu AB
Kenya Muranga Kangunu AB
Kenya Muranga Kangunu AB
Complex cup sweetness accented by hints of fruit and spices, with well integrated acidity for the origin. Notes of sugarcane juice, orange, tamarind, peach tea, fennel, ginger tea with lemon. City to Full City.
Full Cupping Notes
Kangunu AB has such a sweet fragrance of cane sugar in the grounds, along with pungent caramelized notes like flambé dessert, and dried fruit accents. Adding hot water, the wet aroma puts forward mild fruited character, dried tamarind, enveloped in caramel-vanilla sweetness, and hints of baking spice. When brewed, the cup sweetness rated very high for us (9.3!), and laid out complex flavors of pressed sugarcane juice, panela, unrefined cane sugar types, and fruits. Our City roast had notes of orange, tamarind, as well as some very nice stone fruit accents that came off like peach tea. Kangunu's top notes are well integrated into the cup sweetness, and so is the acidity. While I wouldn't exactly call it "balanced", it should appeal to those who enjoy complex Kenyan flavors but not so much the screaming bright acidity that are often part and parcel with those profiles. I found the acidic impression to be tea-like, and tannic, rather than citric and tart. As the coffee cools, the cup shows a smattering of aromatic spice notes, like anise seed and fennel, cinnamon, and ginger tea with lemon.

Origin & Farm Notes
Kangunu Farmers Cooperative Society is located about 140 km North West of Nairobi in Murang'a North district of the Central Province. The Murang'a area is a rich agricultural oasis on the slopes of the Aberdare Mountains. Kangunu is at 1740 meters, endowed with rich volcanic soils that are deep, well drained and have a lot of organic material that are beneficial for coffee. As with other good coops in Murang'a, the farmers typically hand sort the coffee cherry before submitting it for processing, removing coffee that's either not ripe, or too ripe, and can cause a defect in the cup. Small things like this make a huge difference in the resulting coffee. This is an AB outturn, which are the medium-sized beans that measure between 15/64" to 16/64". Screen size doesn't always equate to a better cup, and this AB lot tasted right in line with the large bean counterpart we sold earlier this year. You can see our video of Kenya processing in action here.
